Portraits of Excellence FAQ
Portraits of Excellence is entirely self-published by me, the author and artist, without the backing of a publishing house or a corporate company. Every page, portrait, and detail is the result of a deeply personal process and a direct personal financial investment to bring this vision to life.
Choosing this path means I maintain total creative freedom to honor these Black creators with my own voice, but it also means my distribution operates a bit differently than a massive publishing house.
While you won’t see my books automatically stacked in every major warehouse or chain store, it means your purchase directly supports independent art and an important cultural mission.
The FAQ below covers a few details about why purchasing looks a little different than a traditional major-house release, and how you can best support this independent project.
Purchasing & Distribution
Why doesn’t your Amazon listing offer Prime shipping?
Portraits of Excellence is printed on demand through a UK-based distributor (Bookvault) to ensure sustainable, high-quality production for an independent title. While it is listed on Amazon, it is fulfilled through standard print-on-demand distribution channels rather than Amazon’s internal warehouse network, which means Prime shipping isn’t automatically attached to the listing. Ordering directly through an independent bookstore or requesting it from your local shop is the best way to support the author and independent retail!
Why can’t I find “Portraits” at major retailers like Bookshop.org or Barnes & Noble?
Production operations for my book are based in the UK and managed through Bookvault rather than IngramSpark—the dominant US distribution engine relied on by platforms like Bookshop.org and major domestic retail chains, so this title doesn’t automatically sync to their systems. Independent bookstores nationwide can still easily order Portraits of Excellence directly through Bookvault’s retailer resources.
If your local bookshop doesn’t carry it yet, ask them to stock it!
Is this book available internationally?
Yes, it is available in many global regions. Because our fulfillment is managed through Bookvault’s global printing network, the book is more likely to be available in standard EU retailers (including Amazon), helping reduce international shipping costs and delivery times.
Are bulk or wholesale discounts available for schools, libraries, or organizations?
Yes! Educational institutions, libraries, and bookstores looking to purchase multiple copies can apply for a retailer account through Bookvault’s Retailer page to access trade terms and wholesale ordering.
Are signed copies available?
Yes! You can reach out to us at bookshop@portraitsofexcellence.com for more information about premium signed author bundles. It’s actually a great way to send more of your support directly to the mission.
Events & Media
Are you available for author talks, school visits, or local library events?
Yes! We love connecting with communities, students, and readers in person. You can reach out directly via the contact page to discuss scheduling an author visit, book talk, or signing.
Can I feature or review Portraits of Excellence on my blog, podcast, or social media channel?

About the Art
You mentioned that you transitioned to digital art as a result of your experience with focal dystonia. Was the artwork in this book created using Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
No. Every single portrait and illustration in Portraits of Excellence is 100% human-made. The artwork is created using digital vector illustration techniques, meaning every line, shape, path, and color was intentionally chosen and structured by Aimee Stevland using professional design software. No generative text-to-image prompts or AI models were used.
